Ramadan 2024

March promises to be a vibrant month filled with festivities. From the colorful celebrations of Holi to the solemn observance of Ramadan, it’s a time for communities to come together. Ramadan, observed by Muslims worldwide, is a holy month dedicated to spiritual growth, inner peace, and strengthening community bonds. This year, it falls in March, marking the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.

During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to dusk. The pre-dawn meal, known as Suhoor, and the post-sunset meal, called Iftar, become central to the daily routine. Traditionally, dates and water are used to break the fast, symbolizing a return to nourishment.

To ensure a healthy Ramadan experience, the World Health Organization (WHO) offers valuable guidelines:

  1. Nourish Your Body: Focus on a balanced diet that provides sustained energy. Opt for whole grains, lean proteins, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoid relying on fried or greasy foods, which can be difficult to digest.
  2. Stay Hydrated: Dehydration is a major concern during fasting. Make water your best friend! Drink plenty of water throughout the night, especially during Suhoor, to stay hydrated throughout the day.
  3. Go Easy on the Salt: Excessive salt intake can lead to complications. Explore the world of herbs and spices! They add wonderful flavors to your dishes without the added sodium.
  4. Keep Moving: Regular exercise promotes healthy digestion and overall well-being. However, avoid strenuous activity during peak fasting hours. Opt for gentle walks or light yoga to keep your body active.
  5. Ditch Tobacco and Vaping: These habits pose serious health risks, especially during a fast. Make Ramadan a time to prioritize your health by kicking these habits to the curb.
  6. Cooking Matters: Fried foods can leave you feeling sluggish. Explore healthier cooking methods like baking and steaming, which preserve nutrients and create delicious meals for Suhoor and Iftar.
